The end of our Singapore Visit

sunny 34 °C

And here we are sitting in the British Airways lounge awaiting the flight to London. A wonderfully restful day starting with a leisurely breakfast, went to the pool around 10am and there we stayed. Shoo'd greenpeace away twice (who the hell called them anyway.....the favourite poster here is Save the Whales.....FOR DINNER).

Read all the papers cover to cover which I loved doing and Mandy got to read her Kindle. Had a "granny nap" until 4pm and then off to the hotel lounge to kill time.

Interesting that the cost of an apartment in Singapore (eighth the size of our house) is about $1.2m. The average weekly earnings is about $1,900 S per month ($1,400 Aust), I can get a dog/maid together as a package for only $1,000 per month (how much just for the maid) and I expect to live until 92 years of age. All these earth shattering items came from the same paper.......don't you just love holidays. Based on Mandy's view of me after I stuffed up the conversion rate; my life expectancy has reduced dramatically !!!!!!

So it was that we off'd ourselves to the airport around 6pm. $17 cab ride in comparison to the $30 on the way out. I told Mandy that he went the long way round to the hotel. Cleared immigration, had our bags checked to Rome and went through security. Interesting that security didn't include scanning or searches. Our stay in London is 5 hours waiting for our connection and we didn't want to miss our bags.

Shopped at the airport on the way to the lounge with our spare cash (ellie/tyson you didn't score the cameras here. Too far to lug with us). I, on the otherhand, brought some Ralph Lauren aftershave and perfume for Mandy; in the process got a RL bag to take to the gym and 2 x RL hats (not too much to lug when its for me).

Now as we await the boarding (shit still 3 hours to go) and no sleep expected for the 13 hour flight, we're having a few final "tiger beers" (with lemon of course).

Have just spoken to Ellie and Heath via Skype so we feel much better to start. Tyson, where are you dude, we want to chat and find out how the new job and apartment is going.

Next entry from London after a shower Pommie style (underarmers only) and shave. From this point it's relatively new for me and new territory for Mandy. Oh joy.

Night all.

Day 3 - Singapore (Search for the long lost laundromat)

sunny 34 °C

And so into day 3 and Mandy is beside herself........must find a laundromat. It's not enough that we can have 2 items laundered and pressed each day as part of the Exec Club, no we must journey to find that elusive of establishments in Singapore. Nowra has 3 or 4 in the Bay and Basin area alone, Singapore well thats another story.

So after consulting Mr Google we set off to Mr Wonder Wash in Geylang Road near the Aljunied MRT.

I shit you not people that was the name of this fine place of clothes re-engineering. This was an expedition which only compared to climbing Pidgeon House Mountain. 3 hours later (Mandy and I were still talking) we sat and watched our unmentionables doing the circuit. The directions to this place were to say the least.....crap. My understanding of the directions was....crap. Mandy's patience with me was wonderful just like the name of this place.

The machines were that good that even all the chilli crab stains were removed.....leave that to you to work out where from.

Having done he laundry it was off to find the ANZ Bank. Gluten for punishment aren't we. Lots of signs in the MRT espousing the fact that the ANZ were "living in our world", try finding them. But find them we did and they were wonderful in sorting out the credit card issue.

And so to an early dinner at Newton Circus. You guessed it "Chilli Crab" and "Chilli BBQ Prawns" on the menu.

For the first time in all the visits, Mr George was not present. I remember George during my first visit in 1974 and he was ancient then. I hope it was only because we had an early dinner that he wasn't present.

Well, an early night tonight. This is the last day in Singapore. Tomorrow we fly to Rome via London with an 11pm flight. Tomorrow we'll laze by the pool and try to have a granny nap in the afternoon. We have a late check out at 4pm but the hotel will let us stay longer until we depart for the airport and British Airways flight. Another great stay and whilst it may seem that we've eaten heaps, we have actually eaten very healthily and walked lots in the high humidity.

Next Blog from Changai Airport lounge.

Day 2 - Have I lost count? It's my 3rd Heineken

Mandy Calls it my Blog time because I'm feeling loose.

sunny 33 °C

A nice sleep in and then a 18 km walk. Can't be exact, miss my iPhone Map my Run/Walk and Coffee Counter. Down to one of the biggest shopping centres that I'm ever seen and back in the 34 degree heat. It had everything from a venice boat ride to an ice skating rink. We saw this being built in 2009 but didn't realise exactly what they were building.

Marina Bay Shopping Complex

Visited my favourite store (Tommy Hilfiger) as the crew of SHW would know. Also went to a golf store which had a coffee shop within, enjoyed a cup and chat with a guy who calls himself Tiger.........what the "f" was his parents thinking when they named him. Anyway we arranged to catch up next year and play a game at Kangaroo Valley with another guy (with a more masculine name of Horner) where I promised to show him how to win and drive a ball properly....also to explain the difference between a septic and the enviro system waste distribution treatment at the course.

My coffee mate

And so it was to the lounge to enjoy the days activities, the view is spectacular. Mandy spied a condo with darkened windows and what she thinks is a porn movie making complex. Great, told me 10 minutes after it closed down. I always pick the wrong seats.

After our walk we spent time by the pool. Mandy jumped in and her eyes immediately stung from the quality of the water. Mark where were you when I needed to advise them on water quality. Although Mandy only has eyes for me, she had another after being in the pool; red and sore.

I enjoyed the vitamin D input considering the low temperatures of the last month.

Well must begone, chilli crab awaits. Oh and another tiger beer. (with lemon)

Check out how Mandy looks when she is waiting to eat mud crabs.

Apprehension.......

Apprehension.......

Great food, but what a mess. I couldn't believe that the waitress tried to tell me how to eat mud crab, she has likely never even caught one. I'm a Queenslander for gods sake and used to catch them with a coat hanger. Mandy and I used to eat three in one sitting...........

Interesting that the crabs sold here come from Sri Lanka.

Singapore-At last the return to our favourite place - Day 1

rain 33 °C

Arrived late last night after a 7 hour flight. Through customs and immigration without problems and after a cheap taxi ride into the city booked into our room. The Grand Copthorne is on the river which meanders through Singapore, we're close to Clarke Quay and the financial district.......Julia, be still your beating heart.

Cosy room on the 26th floor with great views across to Singapore Harbour. View from our room

View from our room

Today was a day of relaxation (read no gym) lucky for us because the gym is being renovated and would you believe it re-opens the day we leave.

So off on a bicycle ride to get our bearings.......heading toward China Town.

And then it was off to what I promised myself. I've never had a pedicure in 56 years and this was my plan for the day. The issue was two fold, firstly find someone willing and secondly enter into a post pedicure arrangement for their Counselling. Post Traumatic Stress would be appropriate in the circumstances given the amount of time spent pounding the turf.

found the perfect place, a young lady clearly in her apprenticeship. Note she didn't look up once and only dry reached on my reckoning 5 times.....

And then onto a nice quiet few Singapore Slings and Heineken Beers in the Lounge at the Copthorne. Have picked a nice restaurant on the waterfront for chilli crab tonight, so away we must go. MandT Day 1.

Oh meant to say, spent 2 hours searching the net for tomorrows activity. Long journey to hunt down the elusive Singapore Laundry. Mandy is driving me crazy after 1 day, must find the laundry. So off we go......MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) to AL Junied EW9 on the red line to 23 Geylang Road with a bag of washing. Oh joy.

We're on our way at last

sunny 3 °C

Well we've left this for a holiday, the last few days has been used to clean up after the big storm and 100km winds. Luckily we didn't lose any trees but was there a heap of branches in the pool.

After the storm

After the storm

The bus from Nowra is the way to go, thanks Carmel. Passed Shoalhaven Water at about 0830 and really know we're on our way. Farewell 3 degrees and hello 32 Singapore.

Dropped off right outside the International Terminal and smooth passage through "border security"....almost as quick as a people smuggler through Melbourne outbound.

Lunch in the lounge was excellent for Mandy (vegetarian) I almost gagged pronouncing it.

My lunch was more interesting. A traditional scotch and coke to soothe the nerves.

An hour before the flight is called. Next stop Singapore at about 11pm tonight.
